MacBook: Wipe your hard drive - here's how to do it

The hard drive of your MacBook accumulates content over time. This is precisely why regular backups are important. If you still want to erase your hard drive, several steps are necessary to do so. Please note that all information on the device will be lost. With a backup, these can be restored.

How to erase your MacBook's hard drive

There may be several drives on the MacBook, depending on the devices and settings. On the boot volume is the operating system. If you want to sell or pass on the device, then it makes sense to erase the boot volume. Before you start the process, first make a backup. For this you can use the iCloud or iTunes.
  1. Restart your MacBook while holding down the "CMD" key.
  2. As soon as you see the Apple logo on the screen, you can release the key. After you have logged in with your data, you are in the macOS- recoveries.
  3. Select the item "Utilities" in the menu that appears and confirm this with the button "Continue".
  4. If the hard drive consists of several volumes, tap in the bar on "Edit" and then on "Delete APFS volume".
  5. Confirm the selection via "Delete volume". Anschließend bestätigen Sie erneut über „Löschen“.
  6. Sobald alle Datenvolumen gelöscht wurden, können Sie die Festplatte auf der linken Seite auswählen und „Löschen“ wählen.
  7. Geben Sie Namen und Dateiformat ein und bestätigen Sie den Vorgang.
