How does a repeater work? The technology briefly explained

With the help of a repeater, the WLAN signal in the network can be amplified and thus reach all areas of your own apartment or house. Since WLAN is also only a data transmission via waves, the signal can easily be disturbed and weakened by electrical sources or thick walls.

How a WLAN repeater works in practice

A repeater is actually a very simple device to understand. Its job is simply to receive a WLAN signal and pass it on.
  1. When you connect to your network with a smartphone or a laptop, the device receives the WLAN signal and converts it into data and content that is tangible for you.
  2. The repeater does exactly the same, but then rebroadcasts the signal starting from its position, thus extending the range.
  3. However, if the repeater does not have your dual-band module, the device receives and transmits on the same frequency.
  4. The result is that the data transmission is halved and thus the range is increased, but the WLAN is slower.

How to set up a WLAN repeater

  1. Since the repeater merely repeats the signal, the setup does not involve much.
