Ubuntu: Using Google Drive - how it works

If you want to store important files and folders in a cloud, you can also use Google Drive on your Ubuntu computer. The setup of Google Drive is thereby possible in a few steps via the terminal.

Before you use it: How to set up Google Drive on Ubuntu

Even though there is no separate version of Google Drive for Ubuntu, you have the option to include the cloud service using the file manager. To do this, first open the Ubuntu terminal by pressing the key combination of "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "T".
  1. In the terminal, enter the command "sudo apt install gnome-online-accounts" to install the Gnome online accounts needed to install Google Drive.
  2. After that, open the Gnome-online-accounts with the command "gnome-control-center online-accounts" and click on "Google".
  3. Now log in to your Google account using your user credentials, click "Allow" and, when prompted, set a new password for the keychain.
  4. Finally, click on your Google account at the top and make sure the "Files" option is set to "On".

Ubuntu: How to use the Google Drive folder

Once you have successfully installed Google Drive on your Ubuntu PC, the Google Drive folder will appear on the left side of the File Manager navigation bar. You can move or save all the files that you want to synchronize with Google's cloud to this folder. If you delete a file from the folder or make a change, this is also deleted from the cloud or the changed file is uploaded to the cloud.
