Capitalizing eszett on keyboard: how to do it

The German language has some special characters, among them the eszett, often called "sharp S". Capitalizing this letter is possible on the keyboard, but not entirely obvious.

Special characters at the touch of a button: the capital eszett requires a special combination.

Normally, capital letters are triggered by pressing "Shift" / "Shift". However, the eszett is an exception, since "Shift" + "ß" produces a question mark in the standard keyboard layout.

This is how the capital eszett succeeds on the keyboard

Consequently, a special combination is needed:
  • Press "Shift" + "Alt Gr" + "ß" at the same time.
  • As a result, a capital eszett appears. Here is the comparison of small and large: ß / ẞ. The large eszett is slightly lower in height, but has a little more width.
Really often this combination is not needed, for a simple reason: there are no (official) German words that begin with a sharp S. The need is therefore conceivably low; it is good to know anyway, for example for sentences or words that you want to capitalize completely.
