Installing PS4 Games: Here's how it works

Unlike its predecessors, the PlayStation 4 requires a short installation phase before launching a new game. This takes up to ten seconds and is mandatory.

Install PS4 games: What happens during installation?

After the disc has been inserted or the download has been completed, the installation sequence will start. However, the whole game does not have to be installed. Only some data is stored on the PS4 hard drive, while the rest is read from the inserted disc.
  1. The installation is required by all PS4 games.
  2. During installation, the most important game data is copied from the disc to the hard drive. Additional data can then be reloaded during the game.
  3. The size of the installed data depends on the game.

Manage the data installed on the PS4

The management of the data installed on the PS4, unlike the installation itself, does not work automatically. If the hard drive is full, you have two options: Either perform a hard drive upgrade or delete the data of another game. You can do this in just a few steps:
  1. Select the game whose data is to be deleted in the home screen.
  2. Press the Options button on your controller.
  3. Select "Delete" in the menu that appears and confirm the process with "OK".
The saved data of the game is now deleted and you have made room on the hard drive for new content. Alternatively, you also have the option to use multiple hard drives and replace them if you do not want to delete any data.
