Playing sound over monitor: How it works

If you don't have additional speakers on your PC, but you don't want to listen to the sound only over headphones, this is also possible with the monitor. However, prerequisites must be met for this.

Sound-capable monitors are not uncommon and controlling them is simple.

Whether playing games, watching Netflix or, of course, Spotify, hardly anything goes without sound. Your monitor can help.

How to play sound via the monitor

To play sound via the monitor, two criteria must be met:

• The monitor must have built-in speakers.
• The connection between PC and monitor must be able to transmit sound, as is the case with DisplayPort.

If these hardware requirements are met, you only need to define the monitor as the primary output device. This is quite simple in Windows 10:

1. Enter "Sound" in the Windows search bar at the bottom left.
2. Then you can select the entry "Sound" in the Control Panel.
3. Click with right on your monitor, which should be listed there, and select "Set as default device".

Normally, the sound should now be output via the monitor. Klar ist, dass Monitor-Lautsprecher nicht in der Lage sind, die Soundqualität hochwertiger Boxen zu liefern. Als spontane Notlösung eignen sie sich jedoch ganz hervorragend.
