Repair Hard Drive: How it works

When you want to repair your hard drive, you're dealing with one of the most important centerpieces of your computer. The hard drive, or HDD, stores the data for your computer. If something is wrong, this guide will tell you everything you need to know about hard drive repair.

Repairing your hard drive: These are possible reasons

In many cases, you can tell if your hard drive is defective by the sounds your PC makes. If there are grinding, clicking or scratching noises coming from the PC, your HDD may be physically defective. Since the HDD has many fine mechanical components, it rarely does any good to open the HDD and try to repair it with your fingers or tools. If you damage the device more severely, your data may be lost. You can perform regular backups with free tools like EaseUS Todo Backup 10. If in doubt, only the specialist can help here. If your hard drive is not recognized, it may be that a cable has slipped or is loose.

If the hard drive is not recognized

If you are using a Windows PC, it is possible to repair the hard drive using on-board tools. To do this, right-click on the corresponding HDD, go to "Properties"> "Tools" in the context menu and select the "Verify". If your system does not recognize the HDD, check the cabling:Shut down your PC and disconnect it from the power.
  1. Open the case.
  2. Check whether the hard drive is properly plugged in and connected. Check if the SATA connector is properly seated on the motherboard. Also too tightly pulled cables can lead to the inoperability.
  3. Close and screw the housing of your PC again, after you have corrected too loose or too tight cables.
By this measure, the HDD should be recognized again in the BIOS. If this is not the case, a more serious defect is to be suspected.
