Turning off the keyboard - How it works on the PC

Wanting to turn off the keyboard on the PC can be necessary for different reasons. While on one hand you can simply unplug the cable, there are also software-based solutions to disable the keyboard.

Various options: Turn off keyboard

Sometimes this can be done quickly by using a power switch on the keyboard itself. Otherwise, you have the option of either removing the batteries on a wireless keyboard or unplugging the power cable on a classic model.If you're looking for a more elegant solution to turn off your keyboard than unplugging it, we recommend disabling it via the Control Panel:
  1. Open the Control Panel. To do this, type "Control Panel" in the Windows search box at the bottom left and open the result with the same name. Click here on the Device Manager.
  2. Open the tab "Keyboards".
  3. There you will find your keyboard. Right-click on it to open the "Uninstall Device" option. Click this to turn off the keyboard.
  4. In the same way, or by disconnecting and restoring the USB connection, reinstall the keyboard.

Turn off keyboard via registry

In addition, it is possible to make the keys inactive by changing the registry. To do this, first press [Windows] + [R], type "regedit" and press "Ok". Click through the following folders: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\kbdclass. Once there, change the "Start" to "4" and the keys are disabled.Also, on a laptop, the keyboard can often be locked and unlocked using a key combination. In most cases, this requires pressing the [Fn] and [F5] keys. Sometimes the second key varies, but the correct one can be recognized by the keyboard symbol.
