SD card not recognized - how to solve the problem

An SD card is a popular storage medium to transfer pictures, videos and other files from a device to the computer. However, it may happen that the SD card is not recognized by the PC. In the simplest case, this is due to a loose contact; in the worst case, the SD card is broken.

Why is the SD card not recognized?

There are several reasons why the SD card is not recognized anymore.
  1. Possibly there is a bad contact between the SD card and the PC. Unplug and re-plug the SD card again and check if it is properly placed in the holder. If necessary, get a new card reader and test the SD card with it.
  2. Update the device driver of the card reader. It may happen that the SD card requires a newer driver. To do this, press the Windows key + R and type "devmgmt.msc" in the Run window. In Device Manager, find out the corresponding device and thus update the driver.
  3. The SD card may not be read because the driver has an error. You should uninstall the driver and reinstall it. To do this, press Windows + R and type "devmgmt.msc". Navigate to the SD card within the device manager. Now click on "Uninstall driver" here. Then look on the manufacturer's site for a new driver and install it.
