GParted: Then formatting Linux hard disk is necessary

If your Linux computer does not work properly anymore or there is a virus on it, it is necessary to format the hard disk. Also, if you are planning to sell your Linux PC, formatting is necessary to delete all personal data. However, please note that before performing the formatting, make a backup of your data to be able to restore the computer later or import the data to another device.

How to format your Linux hard drive with GParted

Since formatting the Linux hard drive while the system is running is not possible, you will need an additional tool like GParted to perform the formatting. Since GParted is not installed on the computer by default, you must first make up for this via the package manager of your Linux PC by entering the command "sudo apt-get install gparted".
  1. Afterwards, open the program via the user interface or the console and enter your Linux password to grant the program root access.
  2. Then select the hard disk to be formatted and the partition to be formatted in the program. If the partition is still mounted, you must unmount it first by going to "Partition" > "Unmount" in the menu.
  3. Then click on "Partition" in the menu, select "Format as" and specify the file system before confirming the formatting by clicking on the green checkmark.
