Android: Format SD card

In most cases, a smartphone has a built-in memory with a small amount of storage space to back up pictures, videos and other data. To expand the memory, you can install an SD card, which you should format before replacing it for security reasons.

Performatting an SD card on Android

To format an SD card, you must first insert it into your device. In doing so, both smartphones and tablets may have a slot for memory expansion. Turn off your Android end device and remove the cover on the back. On some devices, you first have to remove the battery to access the slot for the memory card. After you have free access to the card slot, try to insert the SD card carefully. Once you have inserted the SD card into the Android device, you can start with the actual formatting.
  1. By formatting, all data has now been removed from the card.
  2. Afterwards, open the "Settings app" on your smartphone and select the "Device Maintenance" item. Note that depending on the smartphone manufacturer, the exact name of the buttons may differ.
  3. Further down you will find the item "Memory" and then the option SD card.
  4. To open the memory settings, click on the icon with the three dots in the upper right corner.
  5. Here you will find the area "Mobile memory". Wählen Sie Ihre SD-Karte aus.
  6. Neben einer Übersicht über den belegten Speicher wird Ihnen auch die Schaltfläche „Formatieren“ angezeigt.
  7. Bestätigen Sie die Anzeige und warten Sie, bis die Formatierung abgeschlossen wurde.
