What is Startpage? We explain the anonymous search engine
The world of search engines consists not only of Google. The smaller competitors with a focus on security and anonymity are particularly interesting. Startpage is one of them. This originates from the Netherlands and has been online since 2006.
What is Startpage and who does the service appeal to?
Similar to DuckDuckGo, Startpage is aimed at Internet users who do not want search engines to collect their data and create personal profiles. At the same time, the developers advertise that your data will not be stored, shared or sold.- The special feature is that Startpage obtains all results via Google. You thus tend to get the most relevant hits, but without the disadvantages of Google.
- Startpage therefore calls itself a kind of firewall between Google and Internet users.
- This is possible because Startpage pays Google. Google thus profits from each user who conducts searches via Startpage.
- The only restriction on the search results are personal and location data, since Startpage does not collect these.
- The developers initially offered two search engines, Ixquick and Startpage. Both were based on different search mechanisms, while especially Ixquick counted on security and privacy. In the meantime, however, both applications have been merged, so that all security-related settings are now also available to you at Startpage.
