Microsoft Office comes in diverse versions. This makes it hard to keep track of the different versions. Learn what the latest Office version is called and how to find out which Office package you have installed on your system.

Office versions at a glance

Microsoft offers Office either through a subscription model or for one-time purchase from its in-house store.
  • Office 365 is Microsoft's subscription service through which you get the complete Office suite. All applications are always updated by Microsoft to the latest version. With an Office 365 subscription, you can therefore be sure to always have the latest Office package installed.
  • Alternatively, Microsoft also offers Office for one-time purchase, the latest version you can currently buy is Office 2019. Unlike Office 365, you can not upgrade to the upcoming 2020 version, but must purchase it again.

Read Office version - this is how it works

If you are not sure what Office version you have installed on your system, you can find out the version via the settings of any Office application.
  1. Open one of the applications of your Offices package.
  2. Click on "File" in the top left navigation to open the menu.
  3. Then select the item "Help" or "Account".
  4. On the right side you will get all the information about your Office package and which version you have installed. Click on the "About [Application]" button, you will get more and detailed information.
