Grub Rescue Error Windows 10: Cause and Solution

If you are using a dual-boot system with Windows and Linux, you may encounter the "Grub Rescue" error during the boot process. To solve the problem, you need to run a system scan using the Windows installation file. If possible, back up your Linux partition data before doing so.

Fixing the Grub Rescue Error on Windows 10

After replacing a hard drive, the "Grub Rescue" error message may appear. The computer then no longer starts, but only displays "grub rescue >" on the screen. This is actually an error message of the Linux boot manager. However, this also occurs when you use a dual-boot system with Linux and Windows 10. To solve the problem on Windows, you need to use your Windows installation disc to access the boot manager and run a system check. Try to create a backup of your Linux partition beforehand. You can use an external hard drive for this.

Restore the boot manager

  1. Insert the Windows installation CD or other installation disc into your computer.
  2. Boot from the disc.
  3. Select "German" as the language.
  4. Click "Next".
  5. Select "Computer Repair Options" at the bottom left.
  6. Click "System Scan".
  7. Wait until the process is complete.
