Is Open Source Software Secure? The answer to the question

Open source software is spoken of when the complete source code of a program is openly accessible and updated via a versioning system such as Git. So anyone can add new code, but this is monitored by the maintainers of the software.

Is open source software really secure?

Of course, with open source code, any developer can view the entire code and thus exploit vulnerabilities. This also happens all the time. However, an open code also offers the advantage that it is checked directly by several people and security gaps can be closed quickly.
  1. As a developer, you can always check what the source code does and whether there is a security vulnerability there.
  2. Even closed code, i.e. closed code that is developed in companies, for example, is no guarantee of security. This is shown by the many scandals in terms of security, which already have a lot of companies behind them.
  3. Most of the time it is even the case that software whose source code is not open collects data and sends it to companies.
  4. But even projects that use open source code are not always completely transparent. WhatsApp uses an open source project for its end-to-end encryption, and its encryption software is considered unbreakable. What goes on outside the encryption, however, only Facebook knows.
