Instagram: Interesting Stats for 2020

For most digital services, the crisis year of 2020 meant no stopping. This is also true for Instagram, the social network focused on imagery. We take a look at the 2020 statistics.

Imposing numbers: The Instagram curve continues to point steeply upward.

Instagram has long been one of the world's leading social networks, and there's no sign of a trend reversal. In fact, the service once again put up impressive figures in 2020.

Worldwide usage: Instagram statistics for 2020

The most important figures surrounding Instagram for the past year are:
  • In total, around one billion people worldwide used Instagram in 2020 - per month.
  • In Germany, the network counted 21 million users. This corresponds to more than a quarter of the population.
  • The U.S. came with 88.5 million users to a similar rate. Among 18- to 29-year-olds, it was even 67 percent.
  • The popular Stories feature is used daily by about 500 million people.
  • Nearly a quarter (23 percent) of active users used Instagram daily.
  • By the way, Cristiano Ronaldo had (and has) the most followers. The impressive number was about 250 million at the end of 2020.
Since social networks live on self-reinforcing effects created by their user base, further growth can be expected for the foreseeable future. The fact that the service is basically free allows an easy and risk-free entry. For people who are not yet part of the gigantic dynamic, this could be quite tempting.
