To connect all devices at home to the Internet, you need a router. This connection can be made via LAN as well as WLAN. With a router, you also have the option of setting up a local network to send data securely within your network.

The functionality of a router simply explained

With a router, data is forwarded to other devices or networks. Thus, you have the ability to connect to the Internet and receive and send data through this connection. There are also different types of routers. In most cases, however, a DSL or WLAN router is used.

1. If you want to send an e-mail, for example, this is sent as a data packet over your network to your router.
2. This decides on the basis of a routing table, which path is useful for the data packet. Depending on the protocol used, various criteria are included.
3. After that, the connection is established and the data packet is prepared depending on the transmission technology.

1. With a DSL router, a connection to the Internet is possible by means of a cable.

4. Bei größeren Unternehmen kommt ein Backbone-Router zum Einsatz. Dieser kann Datenpakete schneller analysieren und weiterleiten und ist deshalb vor allem bei hohem Datenverkehr nützlich.
