What is HarmonyOS? We explain the new operating system

HarmonyOS comes from China and is supposed to give the globally spread mobile operating systems Android and iOS a run for their money. With us you will learn everything about the background and features of HarmonyOS.

With HarmonyOS China wants to attack the mobile software market.

The reason for the release of HarmonyOS was the ban of the USA regarding Chinese manufacturers like Huawei. As a result, these were no longer allowed to use Android, so that their own operating system became necessary.

What is HarmonyOS and why was it developed?

The development of HarmonyOS began back in 2017, but the changing economic conditions ensured an accelerated completion. In the summer of 2019, HarmonyOS was presented to the public:

• Basically, HarmonyOS is similar to the great role model Android: it is based on open source, is flexible and modular, the application is not limited to smartphones, but should also be compatible with other smart devices such as televisions, smartwatches and headphones.
• In addition, HarmonyOS is supposed to be particularly slim, so it requires few hardware resources and is therefore faster (and more secure) than the competition.
• This results in a higher scalability compared to Android and iOS.
• The rollout of the operating system will begin this year, initially with a TV (Honor Vision). In winter, the first Huawei smartphone with HarmonyOS is supposed to appear, but only in China.
• A complete switch of all devices to HarmonyOS, on the other hand, is not planned in the foreseeable future, since the app selection, which is the most important criterion for mobile systems, is still far from competitive.

In the long run, however, HarmonyOS is supposed to become a global name and expand the duel between Android and iOS by a strong competitor. Whether this plan will work out remains to be seen, as the Google services that are so popular in the West will not be available.
