Valheim: Hosting a game - how it works

Valheim is already a lot of fun on its own, but unfolds its full potential in multiplayer mode. We explain how you can host a game, what options are also available and what to keep in mind.

Under control: as a host, you start a game and can set parameters such as the password.

For farming materials alone, it pays to play Valheim with multiple Vikings. This is possible either as a host or as a guest.

Valheim: How to host a game

In the main menu of Valheim, you have several options. To host a game, proceed as follows:

1. Select a character and click "Start".
2. Independently of whether you take an existing world or create a new one, activate the "Start Server" function.
3. If you wish, enter a password before clicking "Start". If you create a community server, a password is even mandatory.

You then host the game and can let both friends and strangers join. This way, everyone can host their own Valheim session; however, the downside is that all other players can only enter the world if it is currently open by the host. For those who don't like this restriction, rented dedicated servers are an alternative.
