What is the Fairphone? We explain the sustainable phone

The smartphone market has reached a proud size and mass production brings many downsides. Fairphone wants to set itself apart from the competition on this point, as its corporate philosophy shows.

Fairphone wants to lead the industry as a moral example.

There is no shortage of examples of the negative sides of smartphone production. Fairphone from the Netherlands is starting precisely there to make it better.

What is the Fairphone? All info on the "fair" smartphone

Fairphone originates from Amsterdam and was founded there in 2013. The company's smartphones of the same name claim to be manufactured in a particularly transparent and fair manner. This concerns both the materials used and the employee conditions:
  • Only materials from tested mines are used.
  • The production conditions are subject to clear rules.
  • Fairphones are modular in design, so that individual elements such as the battery, cover or display can be easily replaced. In this way, less material is needed, there is less electronic waste and users do not have to buy a new device directly in case of damage.
Fairphone itself is aware that a completely environmentally and human-friendly production is currently not possible. The goal is therefore to keep the negative effects at least as low as possible and thus be an example to the industry. Cooperation with non-profit organizations helps with implementation. So far, the Fairphone has appeared in two generations; the current model is the Fairphone 2, which costs around 400 euros, depending on the retailer. The Fairphone 3 is already expected, but official info on the launch is still pending.
