WhatsApp: Mute chat - how it works

When you receive a new message in one of your WhatsApp chats, you are notified by a sound signal. If the signal disturbs you, the Messenger app offers you the option to mute your chats. We explain how this works for individual chats in this article.

How to mute individual chats in WhatsApp

Even in group chats, it can become annoying over time if you are notified of every message sent by a sound or a pop-up window. To no longer be informed about every WhatsApp message, it is therefore worthwhile to mute the corresponding chat.
  • If you have an iPhone, please open the chat you want to mute first and tap the menu icon in the top left corner.
  • From the menu, then select the "Group Info" option and tap "Mute".
  • If you use WhatsApp on an Android device, please open the three-point menu in the corresponding group chat.
  • Tap in this on the entry "Mute notifications" and select the desired period of 8 hours, a week or a year.
  • Finally confirm your selection with "OK" so that the change is applied.

Mute chat: How to turn off all WhatsApp notifications

If you do not only want to mute a single chat in WhatsApp, but generally do not receive notifications from WhatsApp, this is also possible. To mute all chats in WhatsApp, please go to the Settings app of your smartphone and navigate to the "Apps" section. In the list that appears, then tap on "WhatsApp", select "Notifications" and deactivate the slider next to the "Show notifications" entry.
