Is Windows Defender a firewall?

To protect your computer from viruses, malware and other malicious software, Microsoft has equipped Windows with Defender. The integrated security suite provides comprehensive basic protection that you can customize and manage through System Preferences. Find out if Windows Defender also comes with a firewall.

Windows Defender: These are the firewall options

Windows Defender's various security features include a firewall. Among other things, the firewall protects your system from unauthorized access by hackers and blocks potentially dangerous programs. You can adjust the status and settings of the firewall via the Windows 10 Control Panel.
  1. Open the Start menu and click the gear icon at the bottom left to open the settings.
  2. Click in the overview on "Update and Security".
  3. Select "Windows Security" in the navigation on the left and switch to the category "Firewall & Network Protection".
Here you will find the three sub-areas of the firewall "Domain Network", "Private Network" and "Public Network" and the respective status. You can activate or deactivate the protection of the sub-areas independently of each other. You also have the option to manually add exceptions for programs and applications so that they are no longer blocked. In addition, you will also find the advanced settings of the firewall here.

External security software instead of Windows Defender

As with Windows Defender, a firewall is often an integral part of the security tools in current protection programs. If you install extra protection software on your computer, Defender automatically disables itself so that there are no conflicts between the programs.
