Mounting MTB pedals: How it works - with tips

After the purchase comes the assembly - and this you can easily do yourself. Our guide explains what to look out for when you want to fit new mountain bike pedals.

Look out for the thread: With pedals, different directions of rotation are common.

Regarding the tightening, there are basically two variants for pedals. Higher-quality pedals are fastened by Allen key, while for the cheaper (or older models) an open-end wrench is necessary.

So you mount MTB pedals correctly

Independent on this, you must know the following during assembly:
  • Bicycle pedals are not screwed in the same direction.
  • This is because the pedals should be loosened in the opposite direction to the pedaling direction, so that they can not accidentally loosen while riding.
  • This means that while you fasten the right pedal by screwing clockwise, the opposite applies to the left pedal.
The threads are thus oriented exactly the opposite, which many users do not know the first time. This can lead to problems, both during assembly and removal. After all: A large part of the MTB pedals is marked in one place, so you can see on which side the attachment should be.
