GIMP: Place shadows behind objects - create depth

Even simple objects get a three-dimensional effect when you work with shadows. With GIMP you have the possibility to place shadows behind objects and thus create a more appealing look. You can use this variant of image editing effectively even with little experience.

Place shadows behind objects

The easiest way to do this is to use GIMP's "Drop Shadow" feature.
  1. After opening GIMP and the corresponding image, you need to select the object you want to add a shadow to.
  2. To use the "Drop Shadow" feature, you first need to find and select the "Filter" button in the top taskbar. Following this, another menu will open where you click on the "Light and Shadow" category.
  3. Select the "Drop Shadow" option from the options that appear. You will now have access to a menu where you can enter the parameters of the drop shadow.
  4. Adjust the shadow for the desired object according to your preferences and specify which color the shadow should have.
  5. When you are satisfied with your selection and the preview, you have to confirm your selection with "Ok" and GIMP will put the individualized shadow behind the desired object.

Using the filter correctly

You should not underestimate the effect the play of light and shadow has on the harmony within a photo. Because of this, you should use the preview function to check that you are achieving the right effect with your settings. It can also be helpful if you adjust the color scheme of the shadow accordingly to make the shadow not appear so dominant.
