Excel: Show day of the week - here's how

If Microsoft Excel only shows you a date value instead of the day of the week, there are several options to change the way the value is displayed. Learn here what options you have to display the days of the week.

Display date values as weekdays - here's how it works

Unless you have set it otherwise, date values in Excel are displayed in the form of the actual date, such as "Feb 20" or "02/20/20". However, if you would like the corresponding weekday or even only the weekday to be displayed in addition to the date value, you can set this, for example, via the number formats.
  1. Open an Excel document and call up the "Start" tab.
  2. Select the date values.
  3. Click on the drop-down menu in the ribbon for the "Number" category and select the "Date long" option to display the weekday in addition to the date value.
  4. If you want Excel to display only the day of the week, you must select the "Other number formats" option.
  5. In the new window, call up the "Numbers" tab and click on the "Custom" entry for "Categories".
  6. In the "Type" input field, enter the value "tttt" to display the full name of the weekday or "ttt" for the abbreviation.
  7. Finally, click "OK".

Display weekday using function

Alternatively, you can use the TEXT function to display date values as weekdays. The syntax of the function looks like this: "=TEXT(value;textformat)".
  • For the variable "value", specify the cell that contains the date value.
  • Specify "ttt" or "tttt" as the text format so that the date value is displayed as the day of the week.
