Open a RAW file - how it works

A RAW file is a raw data format, i.e. uncompressed digital images, in digital photography and many times larger than a JPG file. However, a RAW file allows for better post-processing, for example with Photoshop.

How to open a RAW file

To view a RAW file, you need the free image viewer tool XnView. After that, you can start editing with Photoshop:
  1. Drag the file into the Photoshop window. This will open it.
  2. The plugin "Camera Raw" will open, if it is installed.
  3. On the right side of the window, you can now use the tools to optimize the file. Among other things, you can adjust the color temperature, white balance, hue, exposure, highlights, depths and more.
  4. With the button "Open Copy" you can display your file in Photoshop as a layer.
  5. After editing, you must save the new file. To do this, click the "Save Image" button.

What is the advantage of RAW files?

Since the effort to open a RAW file is higher, the format must offer you advantages. RAW- file formats save all image information and so you don't have to fear data loss. Especially with important photographs this is a significant advantage. So many settings are possible afterwards, like the white balance.
