Operating systems: market shares at a glance

With Windows, Microsoft once set the course for today's digital world. But what about today, as mobile devices are on the rise? A look at operating system market shares provides insight.

On the computer, Windows remains completely unrivaled.

Stationary operating systems: market share clearly in favor of Windows

The number of PC sales is declining worldwide. Nevertheless, quite a few million PCs and laptops are in use worldwide every day. Windows comes altogether on a market share of 77 per cent. The individual Windows versions are distributed as follows:
  • Windows 10: 62 percent
  • Windows 7: 21 percent
  • Windows XP: 0.9 percent
  • Windows 8.1: 2.5 percent
  • Windows 8: 0.4 percent
In the remaining 23 percent, Apple's MacOS X comes in at 17.5 percent, while the numerous Linux distributions divide the rest among themselves. This makes it clear that Windows still plays a leading role in the mobile age.

Inverted world for mobile operating systems

At the same time, the market looks completely different for mobile operating systems: Here, Windows (0.03 percent) can only claim a very small market share, while Google (74.4 percent) is running a lonely course at the top. Apple's iOS also has significantly more users than Windows Phone with 24.9 percent.
