MacOS Versions: All the important info on the operating system

Since one of Apple's first operating systems, Mac OS X Server 1.0 from 1999, the company has now developed and released a whole series of MacOS versions. Even the current name "MacOS" has evolved from the earlier names "MacOS X" and "OS X".

MacOS versions: These are still compatible today

  • You can't use all macOS versions properly today. In general, it is recommended that you always install the latest macOS version to ensure app compatibility and to be able to use the latest security updates.
  • Especially if you are using a relatively old Apple device, however, you should make sure that your device version is compatible with the latest operating system before updating.
  • The currently still recommended macOS versions are the following:
macOS High Sierra macOS Sierra OS X El Capitan OS X Yosemite OS X Mavericks OS X Mountain Lion OS X Lion OS X Snow Leopard
  • MacOS Mojave represents the latest version from Apple since 2018.

How do I find out my version of the operating system?

To find out the operating system version you are currently working with, click on the apple icon. Then select "About this Mac" to get information about your version. Here you can also find out if your device meets the system requirements for an update.Tip: If you use mobile Apple devices such as an iPad or an iPhone, your operating system is called iOS. Always update your iOS version here as well.
