The Internet is based on HTML. If you compare modern web pages with pages from 20 years ago or more, it quickly becomes clear that HTML has also come a long way. We give an overview of the versions.

Here's a look at the markup language timeline:- HTML (1992): original version without text
- HTML (1993): text and image integration
- HTML+ (1993)
- HTML 2.0 (1995): introduction of forms technology
- HTML 3.0: not released
- HTML 3.2 (1997): integration of tables, applets and more
- HTML 4.0 (1997): stylesheets (CSS) appear on the screen, plus scripts and frames
- HTML 4.01 (1999): corrected update of HTML 4.0
- XHTML 1.0 (2000): new formulation of HTML 4.01
- XHTML 1.1 (2001): strict version as a result of splitting XHTML into modules
- XHTML 2.0 (2006): discontinued during work because of the future HTML5
- HTML5 (2014): new vocabulary and the foundation for the standard to date, building on XHTML
- HTML 5.1 (2016)
- HTML 5.2 (2017)
