A chronological overview of all HTML versions

The Internet is based on HTML. If you compare modern web pages with pages from 20 years ago or more, it quickly becomes clear that HTML has also come a long way. We give an overview of the versions.

HTML is the backbone of websites and has undergone a lot of development.

The current status quo belongs to HTML5, the fifth version of HTML. However, many small steps were necessary to reach this level.

Progress HTML versions at a glance

Here's a look at the markup language timeline:
  • HTML (1992): original version without text
  • HTML (1993): text and image integration
  • HTML+ (1993)
  • HTML 2.0 (1995): introduction of forms technology
  • HTML 3.0: not released
  • HTML 3.2 (1997): integration of tables, applets and more
  • HTML 4.0 (1997): stylesheets (CSS) appear on the screen, plus scripts and frames
  • HTML 4.01 (1999): corrected update of HTML 4.0
  • XHTML 1.0 (2000): new formulation of HTML 4.01
  • XHTML 1.1 (2001): strict version as a result of splitting XHTML into modules
  • XHTML 2.0 (2006): discontinued during work because of the future HTML5
  • HTML5 (2014): new vocabulary and the foundation for the standard to date, building on XHTML
  • HTML 5.1 (2016)
  • HTML 5.2 (2017)
