Change macOS security settings: How to do it

From time to time, you may receive a security warning when trying to launch an app from a developer not verified by Apple. The reason for this is the security settings of macOS. Learn how to adjust the settings and what you should be aware of.

Changing security settings - here's how

To prevent the spread of malware and other malicious software, Apple has introduced a Developer ID for apps that come from sources other than the App Store. The ID allows developers registered with Apple to digitally sign their apps. This allows Apple to ensure that the apps are not malware.Unverified apps are blocked by the Mac's default security settings. However, you can set exceptions and adjust the security settings manually. To access the security settings:
  1. Click on the Apple logo in the top left navigation and select "System Preferences"
  2. In System Preferences, go to the "Security" category and then to "General".
To change settings, you must first enter your admin password for security reasons.

Open app despite security warning

If you want to open an app despite the security warning, follow these steps:
  1. Click the icon of the app while holding down the Control key.
  2. Select "Open" in the context menu.
The app will then be noted as an exception and can then be opened by double-clicking, just like apps from the App Store.
