For increased security: Change Mac IP Address

To increase security when browsing the Internet or to prevent phishing of your data by other users targeting your IP address, it can be helpful to change your Mac's IP address.

Change Mac IP address in a few steps

You can adjust or change the IP address of your Mac via System Preferences:
  1. To begin, you need to select the "Network" subitem in System Preferences.
  2. Select the network you are using in the bar on the left and click the "More Options" button on the right.
  3. In the TCP-IP tab, the next step is to open the drop-down menu next to "Configure IPv4" and select the sub-item "DHCP with manual address".
  4. Now change the last digit in the "IPv4 Address" field. In the other fields "Subnet Mask" as well as "Router" no changes are made.
  5. With a click on the "OK" button, your IP address is adjusted.
For your own safety and to preserve Internet connectivity, you should note your previous settings or make a screenshot, so that the you can restore the last settings if necessary.

Alternative IP address change on Mac

In case you don't want to adjust the IP address manually, you can also have your IP address adjusted automatically. To do this, first follow steps one through three in the list above. Only now, instead of selecting "DHCP with manual address" from the drop-down menu, select the sub-item "Renew DHCP Lease", which will immediately generate a new IP address.
