Android 9: Change MAC address - these ways are possible

The MAC address can be used to uniquely identify a device. For example, with your router, you have the option to allow access only to certain MAC addresses. The address is usually fixed for each device. To change this, you therefore need root rights.

How to change the MAC address on Android 9

As with any Android device, it is not possible to simply change the MAC address on Android 9. To do this, root privileges are necessary. These represent an intrusion into the system, but you can only get access to the internal system this way. You can change the MAC address directly via a terminal command, but here you have to enter the new address yourself. Alternatively, it is also possible to use a special app. However, you have to root the smartphone here as well. The process is deeply embedded in the operating system, which is why you as a user usually have no access.
  1. Once you have the necessary root rights, download a necessary app.
  2. Here, for example, the app Pry-Fi offers itself.
  3. Download this from the Google Play Store and install it on your smartphone.
  4. Then start the app. The app will now show you the current MAC address and other information.
  5. Follow the instructions to change the Mac address.
