How to turn off the iPhone without a button?

If you want to turn your iPhone on or off, it's as simple as using the power button. Alternatively, however, there is also the possibility to turn off the smartphone without any buttons at all. How this works and what you need to keep in mind, you will learn in our guide.

Switching off the iPhone via the settings

In addition to switching off via the power button, you can also shut down your iPhone via the settings. Follow these steps to do so:

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Select "General" in the overview.
3. Scroll down and tap "Turn off".
4. Finally move the slider on the display to the right with your finger.

However, there is no alternative to the power button for switching the smartphone back on.

Forcing a restart - this is how it works on the iPhone

If your iPhone does not run properly or you have problems with apps, switching the smartphone on and off can often remedy the situation. However, if the iPhone has hung up and no longer responds to any inputs, you need to force a restart. All models from the iPhone 8 you restart via the following steps:

1. Press the volume button "Volume up" briefly.
2. Press the volume button "Volume down" briefly.
3. Hold down the power button until the Apple logo appears on the display, the smartphone then restarts.

On the iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, you need to hold down the volume down button together with the power button. On even older models like the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, you need to press and hold the home button in combination with the power button until the Apple logo appears.
