How does eSIM work? All information
eSIM stands for embedded SIM and is the name for a new type of SIM card that is built into mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets. So far, however, the technology is only supported by a few devices and mobile carriers. We explain how eSIM works here.
How the use of the new eSIM
The eSIM is a small chip that is permanently installed in various mobile devices and serves as a replacement for the classic SIM card. By using eSIM, it is no longer necessary to insert or remove the SIM card manually. The eSIM is particularly advantageous when switching mobile providers, as it means you no longer need a new SIM card, but only have to enter an activation code.- If you are a Vodafone customer, you will need an activation code and an ePIN. Once you have scanned the activation code with your smartphone and entered the six-digit ePIN as confirmation, your eSIM profile is automatically installed and can be used.
- At Telekom, scanning an activation code is also necessary. You will receive this either by mail or online at the Telekom customer center.
- The activation of the eSIM at O2 is possible online or in the O2 app. For this you need, in addition to an eSIM-enabled smartphone, also an already activated classic SIM card.
