Cleaning Laptop Fans: The Right Technique

Your laptop's fans draw in cold air from the outside and direct it past the hardware via ducts. In the process, the fans also move heated air out of the case to the outside. This prevents your device from overheating. But fans draw in dust and therefore need to be cleaned regularly.

Cleaning your laptop's fan

You should clean your laptop regularly. Fans, in particular, quickly become clogged with dust and then can no longer cool the device properly. Regular cleaning will prevent your laptop from getting damaged or the fans from getting louder and louder. You will need cotton swabs and clean brushes. Compressed air spray for cleaning electronic devices is also useful.

How to proceed to clean

1. Disconnect the laptop from the power supply and turn off the device.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Disconnect external media and other devices from the laptop.
4. Turn the laptop over with the back facing up.
5. Loosen the screws in the case.
6. Lift up the cover and put it aside.
7. Remove dust from the fan first with a cotton swab.
8. Use a clean soft brush to clean small gaps.
9. Lift the fan out without disconnecting the cables.
