Enable file version history in Windows 10

If you work on the computer every day, you will have to save, create or delete many files. If a mistake happens in the process and a file is accidentally deleted, this is not always a problem in Windows 10. If you have enabled the file version history, different versions of the file will be saved automatically.

How to enable the file version history in Windows 10

If you have accidentally deleted a file in Windows 10, you can restore it in most cases. To be able to use this backup, you just need to enable the file version history in Windows 10. Your files will then be saved here regularly and you can restore a previous version at any time.
  1. Go to your desktop and press the key combination "Windows" key + "I". After that, the Windows Settings window opens.
  2. Now click on the option "Update and Security" here.
  3. Then select "Backup".
  4. In the next area, click on "Add Drive".
  5. Now you need to select a drive on which the backup files should be stored. Here you can select any hard drive that is connected to your PC.
  6. Once the function is activated, make sure that you have selected "Back up my files automatically".
  7. Note that in the file version history only files within the Windows library are backed up.
  8. Under "Backup Settings" > "More Options" > "Add Folder" more folders can be added or selected.
