MacOS Yosemite: Change folder color

In macOS Yosemite, the user interface can be personalized in several ways. As in previous versions of the operating system, you can color-code folders with tags. If that's not enough, you can also use a trick to completely recolor the icons.

Customize folder color - here's how to do it

In macOS Yosemite, you can use the Preview app or Pages to color the folder icon the way you want. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click the folder you want to colorize with the right mouse button.
  2. Select "Information" from the context menu.
  3. Click the folder icon in the upper left corner with the left mouse button and press [CMD] + [C].
  4. Open the "Preview App" and paste the copied icon. This works by clicking on "File" in the navigation and select the item "New from Clipboard".
  5. Now call the "Color Correction" via the item "Tools" in the menu bar and adjust the folder color as desired.
  6. Once you have found the right color, press the key combination [CMD] + [A] to select everything and then [CMD] + [C] to copy the contents.
  7. Switch back to the information window from step two.
  8. Select the folder icon there again and press [CMD] + [V] to paste the recolored icon.

Tagging folders

With macOS Mavericks, Apple introduced tags as a successor to the previous Finder labels. With the function, you can not only mark folders with a color, but also assign them to a category at the same time. This makes complex file structures clearer and easier to organize.
