Tubeless Tires: What are the advantages without a tube?

Bicycle tires without a tube are on the rise. What sounds contradictory at first is actually a simplification of many processes. Accordingly, the advantages of the tubeless concept are also manifold.

No tube, no problems? Tubeless tires score on several levels.

We have already explained the basic info on tubeless tires here. In the following, we will go into a little more detail about the strengths.

Multiple advantages: These factors make tubeless tires

The advantages of tubeless tires are particularly evident in mountain biking:
  • Tubeless tires can be driven with less pressure. While this is not relevant for road bikes, it is even more so for mountain bikes, as it means more grip and traction off-road. For hard trails and other MTB adventures tubeless tires are alone therefore at an advantage.
  • Also the lower weight due to the waiver of a tube makes itself noticeable. This is especially true during strenuous climbs. A mountain bike hose weighs (depending on its dimension) several hundred grams; with two hoses, a saving of over half a kilo is possible. This improves the braking performance at the same time.
  • The tube is the weakest link in the wheel, accordingly, there are significantly fewer flat feet with tubeless tires. A jacket without a tube is also not indestructible, but nevertheless significantly more robust. In heavy terrain is all the more worthwhile.
The upgrade to tubeless tires is thus worthwhile especially for mountain bikes, not without reason are models such as the Maxxis Minion strongly spread. The only prerequisite is that the wheel (ie the "rim") is also marked "Tubeless Ready", which is often the case.
