iPad screen rotation: How to do it

To rotate the screen on the iPad, you usually just need to hold the iPad itself on edge or landscape. However, if the screen does not align to your liking, it is necessary that you turn off the orientation lock.

How to rotate the screen on iPad

In order to rotate the screen on iPad, you need to disable the so-called alignment lock. When this is enabled, the screen will always be displayed in portrait orientation. If you release the orientation lock, the screen will rotate when you tilt the iPad. You can turn the orientation lock on and off in the Control Center.

Unlock the orientation lock

  1. Swipe the screen of your iPad from bottom to top. If you have an iPad with iOS 12 or later, swipe down from the top right corner.
  2. The Control Center will open.
  3. The icon to rotate the screen is a small lock with a round arrow.
  4. When the icon is red, tap on it. The screen will now rotate when you tilt the iPad on its side.
  5. To close the control center, you can tap the top of the free edge of the screen, press the Home button, or drag the control center down.
If the screen stops rotating, you can re-enable the orientation lock. You can recognize an activated lock by the fact that the lock in the control center is red. On some iPad models, you can deactivate the alignment lock via the side button. You can see whether this is possible under "Settings" -> "General" -> "Page switch".
