MacOS: Update hangs - what you can do in this case

To always enjoy the full performance of macOS, you need to update regularly. However, every now and then you may encounter problems while installing the update, which will prevent you from using your Mac properly.

This is what you should try if the update hangs

Before every update you should make a backup of all your data. Because problems during the update can cause your data to be lost or damaged.
  1. First you need to perform a boot in recovery mode. To do this, press "Command" + "R".
  2. Now start Disk Utility and select that you want to repair your hard drive.
  3. Following this, you need to reset the boot volume and then let your Mac boot.
  4. Now your Mac will boot as usual. Now check if all your data is still there. If necessary, make a backup if you no longer have a current one.
  5. To install the update again, open the App Store.
  6. There you will find the normal update, but also the combined version.
  7. This will raise the performance of your Mac. Download it and install the update with the option "After restart".

Take your time

If you have little experience with Apple so far, it may surprise you how long a system update takes. This is because Apple's updates are always comparatively extensive and also offer you improvements in terms of performance. Therefore, you should postpone the update to a time when you have enough time.
