Offline dictionaries - an overview of the options

If you are looking for a dictionary that you can also use offline, you have various options to choose from. In addition to various desktop applications, many of the apps for on-the-go also come with an offline mode. Find out here which dictionaries work even without active Internet access.

Offline dictionary for smartphones and tablets

Many of the translation or dictionary apps currently available can be used without the Internet.
  • You can download the dict.cc app free of charge for both iOS and Android from the respective App Store. The dict.cc app includes more than 20 languages. You download all available vocabularies within the app, so you can look up words even without a network. However, you can only use dict.cc's voice output with an Internet connection.
  • Another free option is the Microsoft Translator app. As in dict.cc, you have the option in the Microsoft app to download dictionaries and thus make them available offline. The Microsoft Translator App is thereby equipped with around 60 different languages and has numerous additional functions.
  • Android users can alternatively fall back on the Google Translator. The translation tool is also free and has an offline function. The app is also available for iOS devices, but there you have to do without the offline mode.

Offline dictionaries for the desktop

There are also dictionaries for the desktop that are equipped with an offline mode. As on the smartphone or tablet, the desktop version of Microsoft Translator offers the option to use the dictionary without a network. Another option, albeit for a fee, is the dictionary software from PONS.
