Elite Dangerous - Odyssey: Paid or Free?

The Odyssey expansion is supposed to be a big step for the not-so-new Elite Dangerous. Along with the delayed release, there has been some confusion about whether Odyssey will be administered for free or at a cost.

Purchase required: Odyssey will not be a free update for Elite Dangerous.

In this post, we first reported on Odyssey, mentioning that the DLC update will be free for owners of the main game.

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey requires separate purchase

But what was the state of affairs back then now looks different:

• Odyssey must be purchased separately. This is due to the size and importance of the DLC.
• Although there is still no fixed release date, the pre-order on Steam is already possible. The price is stated at 34.99 euros.
• For 46.99 euros there is the Deluxe Alpha Expansion. This contains in addition to Odyssey an access to the alpha phase, which is to take place before the release.

The main game is consequently also required; here it is advisable to keep your eyes open for sale promotions, as Elite Dangerous has already been available extremely cheap several times. At Epic Games, there was even a free promotion for a time in November 2020.
