Using Alexa without the Internet - does that even work?

Many smart home devices only work when they are connected to the Internet - including the Amazon Echo with voice assistance Alexa. However, the smart speakers are not completely useless. Find out here which Alexa functions are available to you even without an Internet connection.

Alexa: These functions are available even without a network

In order to use the voice assistant Alexa on your Amazon Echo device, an Internet connection is required for almost all devices. Some of the newer Echo devices have been equipped by Amazon so that they can process a few voice commands even without an active connection to the network.
  • About the settings of the Alexa app, you have the option to activate the "Local Voice Control" for your Echo device. To date, however, the function is only available for the Echo Plus, the Echo Show 2 and the Echo Studio.
  • Once the local voice control is active, you can control connected devices, such as lamps or sockets, as usual by voice input. However, if a hub, such as the Philips Hue Bridge, is located between the Echo and the lamp, the local voice control no longer works.
Completely without an Internet connection and without the local voice control, you can use Alexa only as a normal speaker. To do this, connect your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth to the Amazon Echo device. Note: If you want to stream music, it is necessary that at least your smartphone or tablet is connected to the Internet. Otherwise, you can only play content stored on the device.
