Offline Navigation: Android - Using Maps without Internet

If you are traveling by car in unfamiliar areas, it is convenient that you can simply use your Android smartphone as a navigation device. But if you have little mobile data left, it becomes difficult. Therefore, download maps beforehand via WLAN and use them offline.

How to use offline navigation on your Android device

To use your navigation app offline, simply download the appropriate section of the map to your phone. Make absolutely sure that your device is connected to the WLAN during the download, otherwise you will consume your mobile data volume.
  1. Open the navigation app Google Maps. If necessary, download the app from the Play Store beforehand.
  2. Tap on the three horizontal lines at the top left of the search input.
  3. A menu will now pop up here. In the list of options, tap on the item "Offline maps".
  4. After that, tap on "Choose your own map" and specify the area you want to download. You can also zoom in or out of the map to zoom in or out of the section.
  5. Finally, go to "Download" to save the map to your phone.
If you would now like to use the map offline, i.e. completely without WLAN or mobile data, click on the corresponding file under "Offline maps" at "Downloaded maps". Usually it is labeled as "Map 1". If you click on the three dots to the right of it, you can give the offline map an individual name or, if necessary, remove it from your device again.
