Adobe Illustrator: Enable Guides

When creating a vector graphic, it is often much more convenient if you have a good orientation when dividing the image. The best way to do this in Adobe Illustrator is to enable guides.

How to enable guides in Adobe Illustrator

If you want to create a vector graphic, Adobe Illustrator is essential for many users. Often it can be drawn or edited particularly well if you activate and use the guides to better orient yourself in the image composition.
  1. Open your project in Adobe Illustrator.
  2. Then click on the "View" tab at the top of the menu bar.
  3. Here you will now find various view options. Pretty far down in the context menu you will find "Smart Guides" and "Guides".
  4. The smart guides are enabled by default. How the guides work, you can edit under "Edit > Preferences >Smart Guides" and adjust exactly to your needs.
  5. Alternatively, however, there are other guides under "View". Hold the mouse pointer on "Guides" and then click on "Show Guides" so that they are activated and you can align objects, text and graphics according to them.
  6. Furthermore, you will also find the option "Show Rulers" in the "View" menu. Then click left or top to create guides.
Depending on what you are working on, the smart guides, the manual guides or even the ruler can be useful tools. It's best to test what is most appropriate in your case.
