When did WLAN come into existence? All information
Whether with the computer or smartphone: wireless surfing is nowadays indispensable. In your own four walls, wireless networking works primarily thanks to WLAN. Find out how long the technology has been around, which standards are current and what you can do if the signal strength is poor.
WLAN: Since when has wireless surfing been around?
WLAN or "Wireless Local Area Network" has been around for about 30 years. The first work on the technology began as early as September 1990. WLAN refers to a local wireless network using a standard from the IEEE 802.11 family.- In 1997, the technology was first published in the form of the WLAN 802.11 standard. At that time, it was a niche product.
- Only in 2002, with the introduction of 802.11g, the technology was able to shed its niche existence and experienced its breakthrough. 802.11g allows a theoretical data transmission rate of up to 54 Mbit/s.
- Current standards such as 802.11 ac or ax allow much higher transmission rates.
