Outlook: SSL encryption - how to set it up

SSL encryption is used to protect your personal data and can also be used when sending emails with Outlook or another email program. For instructions on how to set up SSL encryption for your email accounts in Outlook, check out this article.

Outlook: SSL encryption is required for this

SSL is the abbreviation for "Secure Sockets Layer" and describes an encryption technology used in data transmission. Even though SSL encryption is most commonly used when using online stores and online banking, it is also possible to set up an SSL connection for your email client. Since SSL encryption is not automatic when sending emails, you need to set up the feature manually.

How to set up SSL encryption in Outlook

To send your emails created in Outlook over a secure SSL connection, it is necessary to change some settings of the email program beforehand. To do this, first open Outlook on your PC or laptop and go to the "File" tab.
  1. Then navigate there to "Information" > "Account Settings" to open a new window listing all your email accounts.
  2. Select one of the email accounts and click "Change" to open the account settings for that account.
  3. Click the "More Settings" button and select "SSL" for the incoming mail server and "Automatic" for the outgoing mail server in the "Advanced" tab.
  4. Also place a checkmark next to the "Server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" entry before confirming the changes with "OK".
