FritzBox: Set encryption - how to secure your WLAN

The FritzBox WLAN network is already provided with a WPA/WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access) encryption. Thus, access to the network is only possible with the corresponding individual network key. In the FritzBox settings, you have the option of adjusting the encryption as well as the network key.

Setting the FritzBox's encryption

If you do not want to use the FritzBox's preset security settings, you can make your own settings via the user interface.
  1. Call up the FritzBox's settings via the browser. This works via the URL "fritz.box".
  2. Click on the left in the navigation on the item "WLAN" and then in the submenu on "Security".
  3. In the tab "Encryption" you can decide whether your WLAN network should be encrypted and with what type of encryption it should be provided. Furthermore, you can define a network key yourself here, i.e. the password that is required to connect to the network. You also have the option to restrict WLAN access for certain devices.
  4. To save settings you have made, you must click "Apply" at the bottom right.

Optimal security

It is not advisable to choose WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) or even no encryption at all for your WLAN network. If you can, it is always good to enable WPA/WPA2 encryption. To ensure that your network is always optimally protected, it is also important to keep the FritzBox firmware up to date. This will help you avoid any security holes in the system being exploited.
