Using SSH on Windows 10 - what the shell

With the Secure Shell or also SSH you can establish a secure connection to a Linux server or a Raspberry Pi. In addition, you can update and manage the various systems via various commands. In Windows 10, the required SSH client is already integrated.

How to use the SSH client on Windows 10

Since an update in October 2018, the OpenSSH client is already an integral part of Windows 10. For this reason, you no longer need additional programs to use the service. If you want to set up a connection to a Raspberry Pi, then this is possible via the command prompt in Windows. However, the Pi must first be set up accordingly.

1. Open either the command prompt or the Windows PowerShell via the search box at the bottom left.
2. Then enter the command "ssh" in the console and confirm it with the Enter key.
3. Now the syntax of the commands is displayed in the console. This is exactly the same as when using SSH under Linux or macOS.
4. If you now want to connect to a server, enter "ssh USERNAME@SERVER". Dabei ersetzen Sie BENUTZERNAME mit dem Namen, mit dem Sie sich beim Server anmelden. Bei SERVER schreiben Sie die IP-Adresse oder die Domain Ihres Netzwerks beziehungsweise Servers hinein.
5. Anschließend müssen Sie den Key mit „Yes“ bestätigen, insofern Sie dem Server vertrauen.
6. Nun werden Sie nach Ihrem Passwort gefragt. Geben Sie dieses ein und bestätigen Sie es mit der Enter-Taste.
7. Anschließend können Sie alle Befehle wie gewohnt nutzen.
