Windows Shell Experience Host - what's behind

Open the Task Manager on your Windows system and you will see numerous services of the operating system in the "Background Processes" area. Windows needs these in order to function as usual. This includes the entry "Windows Shell Experience Host".

What's behind the Windows Shell Experience Host

The Windows Shell Experience Host is one of the essential Windows processes that the operating system needs. For example, it is needed for Universal Apps to be displayed in window mode or it enables the transparency effect of the taskbar.
  1. But note that the Windows Shell Experience Host is stored as "ShellExperienceHost.exe" on your system. This should be found in the "WindowsSystemApps" folder. If you find a similar file in another location, it may be malware.
  2. If the process causes unusually high CPU usage, there is a problem. Although you can terminate it via the Task Manager, this is not possible permanently. Usually, the process is automatically restarted after a few seconds.
  3. In case of a problem, check whether there is a new update for Windows or your apps and install it if necessary.
  4. Alternatively, you can change the background to a "solid color" via the display settings.
